Lee County Mugshot Sources
Start with the custody layer. Most Lee County local arrests are booked at Sumter–Lee Regional Detention Center in Sumter, so the regional operator is the likely custodian of the booking image. Lee Correctional Institution is an SCDC state prison. Its photograph belongs to a statewide prison record and may depict a different admission than a county booking. The Lee County Sheriff can hold its own arrest or incident records, but detention calls are routed to the regional center.
A current portal image can disappear when the roster card is removed. That does not establish destruction of the underlying photo. No official post-release image window or regional retention period was verified. Ask the custodian for the image tied to the exact booking. Identify the person, booking date or number when known, and arresting agency so the response does not mix separate arrests.
| Channel | Has a photo? | How to access |
|---|---|---|
| Sumter–Lee current portal | May show the current booking card image | Inspect the official current roster, then request the past booking image |
| Regional detention records | May hold the booking photograph after web removal | Submit a focused South Carolina FOIA request |
| SCDC current search | Displays an SCDC inmate photograph | Search a person still incarcerated in SCDC |
| SCDC records | May provide a releasable former-inmate image | Request the defined public photograph or record portion |
| SLED registry | May show a qualifying registrant’s image | Use only for a person subject to that statutory registry |
| Agency news | May show an arrest or incident image | Keep the agency attribution, date, and stated context |
| Commercial archives | May preserve old or wrong images | Treat as unverified and return to official sources |
Request Lee County Booking Photos
South Carolina FOIA, Title 30 Chapter 4, provides an inspection and copying route subject to exemptions. A request for a regional image should go to the records custodian identified by Sumter County or Sumter–Lee Regional Detention Center, not automatically to the Lee County Sheriff. Call the regional detention line at 803-436-2340 to verify the current submission address. Send a separate request to the Sheriff only for an image or record that office actually maintains.
- Name the person and include date of birth, booking number, and booking date when known.
- Ask for the booking photograph associated with that specific Sumter–Lee booking.
- Also request the booking and actual release date, release type, and receiving agency so the image retains custody context.
- Request electronic delivery and ask for an advance itemized estimate above a stated cost limit.
- Ask for segregable nonexempt portions and the statutory basis for any withheld material.
- Compare the returned identifiers and event dates before attributing the image.
Section 30-4-30 generally requires notice of the agency’s determination within ten business days for records less than two years old and twenty business days for older records. General production periods then apply under the statute. An agency may seek a deposit of up to 25 percent of reasonably anticipated cost. These are statutory process rules, not a supported Sumter–Lee photo fee. No fixed regional fee schedule was found.
Note: Request the exact booking image and release entry together; a photograph without its event record can be easily misread.
Match Lee County Custody Photos
The most reliable image depends on the system. A Sumter–Lee booking photo documents a regional jail admission. An SCDC current-search photo identifies a person in the state prison system. Someone can have both records at different points, and the images may not be identical. The ordinary SCDC search expressly covers only people currently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC as of midnight the previous day, so released people are expected to drop from that tool.
SCDC Policy OP-21.09 lists the photograph among public inmate-record fields subject to law and redaction. A focused former-inmate request can ask SCDC for the public photo tied to the state record and the related release summary. SCDC’s FOIA route is the FOIA Coordinator, Office of General Counsel, P.O. Box 21787, Columbia, SC 29221-1787, or FOIA@doc.sc.gov. Do not ask for confidential home, medical, trust-account, victim, or witness information.
Lee County Sheriff App Limits
Lee County has an official Sheriff’s Office-SC mobile app, but the public store listing emphasizes alerts, anonymous tips, agency information, weather, a calendar, and links to agency web and social channels. It does not advertise an inmate lookup, a release list, or a mugshot module. That makes it an agency-announcement channel, not a substitute for the regional detention records custodian.
App features can change. If a later version adds a custody feature, identify the actual data provider and update date before relying on it. Until then, a released person’s absent app image says nothing about whether a booking photograph exists. Use the Sumter–Lee request route for the regional booking and SCDC for the state-prison image.
Lee County Registry Photo Limits
The SLED Sex Offender Registry is a special-purpose source for people with a statutory registration duty. A qualifying public entry may include a photo and status information. Presence in that registry does not state the date or manner of the relevant jail or prison release, and absence does not answer whether a general offender was released. Read the registry’s warnings and preserve the source date.
Government agency news may also carry an arrest, incident, or wanted-person image. That image can differ from the jail’s booking photo. An agency post should retain its caption, date, and case context. News reports may help locate an official release or press statement, but their photos should not be relabeled as a Sumter–Lee booking image unless the source says so.
Commercial mugshot archives and other aggregators can keep stale photos after official web removal, omit a later disposition, or attach the wrong person. No commercial publisher is linked here. An old repost is not proof of a current record, release, or conviction, and payment-based removal offers are not a substitute for statutory rights or agency correction.
Lee County Mugshot Publication Law
South Carolina does not impose one categorical rule that makes every adult booking photograph public or secret. A requester may seek an existing image under FOIA, while the custodian applies exemptions, expungement or sealing orders, privacy restrictions, active-investigation concerns, and other law. The result can differ by record and time. Section 30-4-40 supplies exemptions, and a partial withholding should still be tested for releasable, segregable portions.
S.C. Code Section 17-1-60 is a targeted anti-pay-to-remove law. It prohibits obtaining South Carolina arrest or booking material, including booking photographs, while knowing it will be published and payment demanded for removal or revision. It also restricts demanding payment to remove, revise, or refrain from posting that material. The statute is narrower than a general ban on publication.
The statute screen supports a precise distinction between unlawful payment demands and the broader question of whether an official image is releasable.
Lee County Mugshot Removal Process
For qualifying dismissed, discharged, expunged, or not-guilty outcomes, Section 17-1-60 provides a certified-mail process under which a covered publisher must remove the material without payment within 30 days after a compliant request. The request identifies the person, arrest date, arresting agency, certified disposition, and exact URL or location. A plea to a lesser or different offense may call for revision rather than full removal.
Government agencies and specified legitimate news, historical, or commentary contexts are treated differently under the law. The statute should be applied to the actual publisher and outcome. It does not guarantee that every image disappears from every place, and it does not turn release alone into a removal right. A person considering the process should obtain the certified disposition and follow the current statutory text.
Lee County Mugshot Expungement
Section 17-1-40 separately governs qualifying expunged arrest and booking material. It can require destruction while allowing sealed retention for three years and 120 days and longer for specified proceedings. Sealed material is nonpublic. These rules must remain distinct from the publisher-removal process in Section 17-1-60. Release, dismissal, acquittal, expungement, sealing, and a publisher’s removal duty are separate events.
The South Carolina Judicial Branch expungement process explains the official path and helps identify the proper certificate or order.
The court process confirms why disappearance from a roster is not the same as a sealing or expungement order.
A released person seeking an accurate official record should begin with the court disposition, then ask the originating photo custodian to apply any qualifying order. If an agency record is wrong rather than sealed, use the agency’s correction path. SCDC lists Ombudsman@doc.sc.gov for reported public-search data errors, while production of a former-inmate photo belongs with the FOIA route.
Note: Release alone does not erase a Lee County booking photograph, and web disappearance does not prove that the underlying agency record was destroyed.
Verify Lee County Mugshot Records
Verification needs three matches: identity, event, and outcome. Compare the person’s name and stable identifiers. Confirm that the image belongs to the specific Sumter–Lee booking or SCDC admission. Then read the court disposition and custody-ending record. A current roster shows present detention, not past release. An SCDC photo belongs to state custody, not automatically to a Lee County arrest.
If the image was found while checking a recent custody change, the Lee County 24-hour release route explains the exact-time request and VINE fallback. For a named person with more than one possible custodian, the Lee County released inmate search traces county, state, federal, immigration, court, and supervision systems. Keep the official source link and observation date with any image reference.
