SCDC Released Inmate Search

South Carolina offers an official released-first tool that is separate from the current prisoner locator. The SCDC Released Inmate Search requires a beginning and ending release date and a county selection. It also offers an optional sex-offender filter. Results are shown ten at a time, with paging and an Export control for detailed output.

This design is especially useful in Lee County because Lee Correctional Institution shares the county name but serves a statewide population. Do not assume every result under a Lee county filter was arrested in Lee County, held at Lee CI, or released to a Lee address. The interface or export must define the field before its meaning is stated.

1. Choose a date range that can include the expected SCDC release.
2. Select the appropriate county field and submit the search.
3. Review every result page and compare SCDC identifiers.
4. Use Export when detailed fields are needed.
5. Cross-check supervision or another receiving agency before describing community return.

SCDC Released Search Fields

The released search is the strongest public starting point for completed SCDC custody events. Its captured interface shows the date-range, county, filter, result, and export structure.

Identity still needs care. Match the exact name, SCDC number, and other lawful public descriptors. Record the agency status wording and observation date. A released result shows that SCDC recorded the end of its custody in the selected range. It does not by itself rule out parole, community supervision, a detainer handoff, or custody under another authority.

SCDC Current Search Boundary

The regular SCDC Inmate Search covers people currently sentenced to and incarcerated in the department as of midnight the prior day. It excludes released people, county-jail sentences, parole, probation, other community supervision, juveniles, and current SCDC fugitives. A former prisoner should therefore disappear from this current-only source. That absence is expected, not a certified discharge.

The SCDC current-search disclaimer states that scope. Use the normal locator as a cross-check for continued prison custody or a transfer between SCDC institutions. Use the released tool for a completed release and SCDPPPS for community supervision.

A current detailed result may include location, admission and sentence information, a photograph, and a projected-release-related field. Preserve the live labels. A projected date can change and cannot replace an actual release record.

SCDC Release Record Proof

SCDC policy identifies many potentially public inmate-record fields, subject to legal limits and redaction. They include photograph, names and aliases, marks and tattoos, SCDC and SID or FBI identifiers, committing county, offense, sentence, sentence start, jail credit, admission, eligibility dates, parole date, projected release date, adjustments, transfers, detainers, institution assignment, and current status.

For a past release, ask for only what proves the event: final authorization, actual date and time, type of release or discharge, release certificate for a supervision exit, related court order, final detainer review, and temporary-custody receipt if another agency received the person. A narrow request is more useful than a demand for the entire file.

Projected release

An estimate based on the sentence and credits then known.

Parole

Conditional release from confinement while the sentence remains under supervision.

Discharge

Agency-recorded end of a custody or supervision obligation, according to its terminology.

Detainer

A claim or notice that may lead to transfer to another authority.

Confidential home address, Social Security, clinical, trust-account, victim, and witness data should not be requested or republished without lawful authority.

Request SCDC Release Records

The SCDC legal-information route identifies the FOIA Coordinator in the Office of General Counsel. Give full name, SCDC number, and the approximate release period. Ask for public sentence and release fields, actual release or discharge time and type, final institution, supervision destination, and the nonexempt part of any receiving-agency documentation. Electronic delivery can reduce copy costs.

At review, SCDC posted charges of $0.10 per black-and-white hardcopy page, $0.25 per color page, and $18.95 per hour for search, retrieval, and redaction. Verify current prices and ask for an advance estimate. South Carolina FOIA also permits lawful exemptions, redaction, and a deposit under the statute.

SCDC Release and Supervision

A person can leave prison and remain under SCDPPPS supervision. Search the agency’s offender supervision tool by its supported fields, then compare identifiers and county of supervision. Online supervision data represents the previous day, so call the current county office for same-day public facts. County of supervision need not match committing county, prison location, or release destination.

SCDC Detainer Release Audit

SCDC’s final audit checks detainers before release. When another law-enforcement agency receives the person, policy records a temporary-custody receipt. That distinction matters in Lee County because the end of a state term can lead directly to county, federal, or immigration custody. “Released by SCDC” should not be shortened to “free” without a destination check.

Request the receiving agency name and handoff date. Then use that agency’s locator or records channel. A county jail can confirm local receipt. BOP covers sentenced federal prisoners from its record range, while USMS may hold federal pretrial detainees. ICE ODLS and the responsible ERO office address immigration custody.

A favorable parole hearing result also precedes release processing. Confirm the actual departure in the SCDC released record and active supervision with SCDPPPS. Each record captures a different step.

Lee County SCDC Distinction

Lee Correctional Institution is a major state prison in Bishopville, not the Lee County jail. It opened in 1993 and houses male close/medium custody under SCDC. Lee County local arrestees are generally held at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center in Sumter. Search by custody layer, not just geography.

Web searches can also surface USP Lee. That federal prison is in Lee County, Virginia, not Lee County, South Carolina. No BOP prison was identified in the South Carolina county. A Lee resident with a federal sentence belongs in the nationwide BOP locator, while an SCDC prisoner belongs in South Carolina’s tools.

The Lee County released inmates overview sets out the local, state, federal, and immigration paths. Accurate results name the custodian, recorded release event, date, and any supervising or receiving agency.

SCDC Date Calculation Limits

SCDC’s public Release Date Calculation tool is educational. Its disclaimer says the output is a general guideline, uses current statutes rather than every historic sentencing regime, assumes the earliest possible result with all potentially available credits, and does not capture every interaction among convictions. It excludes Youthful Offender Act cases and cannot calculate the official date for a person who is already sentenced. It should never be cited as proof of a named prisoner’s discharge.

An official calculation must account for sentence commencement, qualifying jail-time credit, concurrent and consecutive terms, statutory limits, disciplinary history, later court amendments, and other commitments. Section 24-13-40 addresses qualifying pretrial-confinement credit, while Section 24-13-175 uses a 365-day year. Sections 24-13-210 and 24-13-230 govern forms of good-conduct and productive-duty or education credit. Offense dates and amendments can affect which rules apply.

For an incarcerated person, preserve the exact projected-date label displayed in the SCDC detailed record and date the observation. SC VINE’s public information line can also provide current location and projected-date information. For a completed event, use the SCDC Released Inmate Search or request the final authorization and actual release time. A projection explains a possible future point; only the release record establishes what happened.

SCDC and Local Credits

County-jail calculations remain separate. Section 24-13-210 includes a local-detention good-conduct rule of one day for every two days served, subject to statute and conduct, and Section 24-13-230 lets the local official determine and publish productive-duty credit. No Sumter-Lee operational policy was verified. Do not import an SCDC calculation into a regional sentence. Ask the sentencing court and regional release desk for the actual credited term and hold review.
